Lead Developer - Apps Modernisation

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end application modernisation engagements from assessment through delivery and transition.
  • Assess legacy codebases, technical debt, dependencies, application portfolios, architecture, and quality metrics.
  • Create prioritised modernisation roadmaps and define target-state cloud-native, API-first, microservices, event-driven, and containerised architectures.
  • Evaluate and apply AI-assisted modernisation tools and design agentic workflows for code analysis, documentation, and modernisation planning.
  • Develop modernisation methodologies, frameworks, delivery patterns, assessment models, templates, reference architectures, and other reusable assets.
  • Facilitate customer discovery sessions and workshops, present recommendations to senior stakeholders, and support pre-sales through solution shaping and estimation.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, contribute to intellectual property and accelerators, and mentor modernisation team members.
  • Deliver measurable customer outcomes and build referenceable success stories during the first 12 months.

Requirements

  • Significant hands-on experience modernising enterprise applications through re-platforming, re-architecting, or legacy transformation.
  • Deep understanding of monolithic architectures, tightly coupled services, legacy integration patterns, and technical debt.
  • Experience assessing complex application portfolios using code analysis tools, dependency mapping, architecture reviews, and quality metrics.
  • Strong architecture expertise across cloud-native, API-first, microservices, event-driven, containerised, and Infrastructure-as-Code environments.
  • Experience with at least one major cloud platform: Azure, AWS, or GCP, including migration and deployment strategies.
  • Strong DevOps capability, including CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, deployment automation, and modern engineering practices.
  • Experience with enterprise or government customers in consulting, professional services, or large-scale transformation environments.
  • Ability to work across the full engagement lifecycle, from advisory and assessment through delivery and knowledge transfer.
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement and communication skills with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Desirable experience includes AI-assisted development, code analysis, automated refactoring, software modernisation tooling, LLM integration, orchestration frameworks, RAG architectures, and multi-agent systems.
  • Familiarity with Australian Government security and digital frameworks, including PSPF, ISM, and the Hosting Certification Framework.
  • Candidates for the security-cleared role must be Australian citizens and hold an Australian Federal Government Security Clearance.
