Base Salary
$207k - $275k/yr
Responsibilities
- Generate and investigate research ideas addressing obstacles to continuous learning in production
- Validate research directions across real customer tasks with the broader OpenPipe team
- Develop LLM training methods and systems involving post-training, reinforcement learning, and agent learning
- Take research ideas through implementation, evaluation, and production deployment
- Use substantial GPU resources to conduct large-scale experiments
- Contribute across the technical stack, including CUDA kernels and LLM tracing dashboards
- Set technical direction, lead complex cross-functional initiatives, and mentor other engineers
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in machine learning or applied research, or a PhD with 4+ years of relevant industry experience
- Demonstrated success developing LLM training methods or systems that improve real-world tasks
- Deep expertise in LLM post-training, including supervised fine-tuning, reinforcement learning, on-policy distillation, reward modeling, and policy optimization
- Strong research judgment and ability to identify high-impact problems, design rigorous experiments, and interpret ambiguous results
- Experience taking research ideas from hypothesis through implementation, evaluation, and production deployment
- Ability to set technical direction, lead complex cross-functional initiatives, and mentor engineers
- Preferred publications, open-source contributions, or other demonstrated impact in reinforcement learning, LLM post-training, or agent learning
- Preferred deep experience with distributed training, GPU optimization, and large-scale model training systems
