Responsibilities
- Lead large technical deliverables from initial problem definition through delivery across multiple months or quarters.
- Design and develop backend systems for vulnerability and dependency management, including security report ingestion, storage, indexing, querying, and third-party integrations.
- Build and improve systems with Ruby on Rails and PostgreSQL and contribute to newer services using Go or Rust.
- Shape technical plans, decompose complex work, and help other engineers deliver effectively.
- Collaborate with product, design, frontend, and engineering partners to resolve constraints and deliver measurable progress.
- Influence the product and technical roadmap through investigation, proposals, and iterative monthly releases.
- Apply security-focused design practices involving malicious or vulnerable software packages.
- Define modular service patterns and provide technical leadership across GitLab Security.
Requirements
- Experience leading complex backend projects from concept through delivery while remaining hands-on with design and development.
- Strong PostgreSQL experience, including query optimization, table optimization, and write-ahead log management in data-intensive systems.
- Strong professional experience with Ruby on Rails, Go, or Python, with day-to-day comfort in Ruby on Rails.
- Experience with large monoliths, large-scale data systems, or established software products.
- Experience shaping delivery plans, guiding technical decisions, and supporting other engineers.
- Ability to collaborate with diverse partners and clearly explain technical trade-offs.
- Experience communicating with leaders, leading peers through complex delivery, identifying constraints, and advancing work.
- Experience using security tooling for vulnerability triage and remediation, or building vulnerability management, dependency management, or related security products.
- Fluency in using artificial intelligence tools to improve delivery while applying sound engineering judgment.
