Responsibilities

  • Architect and evolve distributed services powering Apple Card and Savings while staying hands-on in code and operations.
  • Lead large, multi-quarter migrations, platform changes, and integrations with financial institutions, payment networks, and Apple services from conception through production.
  • Set technical direction and engineering strategy across teams and organizations through specifications, design reviews, code reviews, and technical discussions.
  • Lead incident response, define service level objectives, improve reliability, and turn operational learnings into architectural improvements.
  • Define testing strategies for complex services, including unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end testing.
  • Represent Apple in technical negotiations with external partners and mentor senior engineers.
  • Drive safe progressive releases, observability, automation, and operational practices that protect reliability and customer trust.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience architecting, building, and operating mission-critical distributed systems at large scale while remaining hands-on in code.
  • Deep understanding of distributed-systems trade-offs involving consistency, latency, throughput, and data-correctness patterns such as idempotency, exactly-once processing, and reconciliation.
  • Expert hands-on software development skills in Kotlin or Java.
  • Extensive operational experience leading incident response, defining service level objectives, and improving architecture based on operational learnings.
  • Experience leading complex cross-team projects from conception to production and driving consensus with global teams and external partners.
  • A testing-first engineering approach with experience designing for testability and defining unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end testing strategies.
  • Experience using generative AI tools throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Preferred experience with Spring, high-volume gRPC services, payments or banking, regulated financial domains, and external financial-partner integrations.
  • Preferred experience with Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, multi-region resilience, load and failure testing, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and progressive release strategies.
  • Preferred experience with Datadog, Splunk, OpenTelemetry, Kafka or equivalent event streaming, Aurora, DynamoDB, security, privacy, and cryptography.
  • No formal degree is required; demonstrated advanced skills and real-world application are valued.
