Responsibilities
- Own developer productivity across the entire 1,200-person ROCm engineering organization.
- Audit developer friction through interviews, instrumentation, friction logging, and build and CI data analysis.
- Prioritize and eliminate high-impact friction involving infrastructure, workflows, CI, builds, and developer-facing tooling.
- Build shared tooling and consolidate fragmented team-specific scripts, infrastructure, and CI configurations.
- Partner with DevOps, QA, and component team leads to drive adoption across autonomous teams.
- Define productivity metrics including build time, incremental compile time, time-to-first-green, environment setup time, and onboarding completion rates.
- Lead build acceleration using distributed caching, incremental build tuning, and faster CI test selection.
- Standardize reproducible developer environments using Dev Containers or an equivalent approach.
- Improve CI failure reproduction on equivalent hardware.
- Publish a quarterly developer productivity dashboard for engineering leadership.
- Establish the function and eventually hire and lead supporting engineers.
Requirements
- Significant software engineering experience in developer tooling, platform engineering, build systems, or DevOps.
- Strong hands-on coding ability in an individual contributor role.
- Demonstrated success improving developer experience at scale across organizations of 100 or more engineers, with measurable outcomes.
- Ability to operate horizontally across autonomous teams and drive alignment without formal authority.
- Deep understanding of CI/CD systems, build infrastructure, and developer workflow tooling.
- Strong communication skills for translating developer friction into engineering priorities and investment cases.
- Experience in GPU or systems software environments such as kernel, firmware, runtime, or compiler development is advantageous.
- Familiarity with the ROCm stack or adjacent GPU compute ecosystems such as HIP, CUDA, and ML frameworks.
- Experience with build caching, distributed build systems, or developer environment tooling at scale.
- Fluency with agentic AI workflows including Cursor, Claude, and Copilot.
- A master’s degree or PhD in a related discipline is preferred.
Benefits
- Hybrid position located in San Jose, California.
- AMD benefits are offered, with details provided through AMD’s benefits overview.
- The role starts as a solo IC with budget available to build a supporting team.
