Responsibilities
- Lead architecture, design, development, and integration of system software, embedded firmware, device drivers, and engineering tools for next-generation Surface products.
- Translate product requirements into technical designs and implementation plans while identifying dependencies, risks, security requirements, and cross-system impacts.
- Develop maintainable, secure, and performant code; conduct code reviews and improve coding standards, test coverage, automation, and engineering practices.
- Lead system-level debugging and root-cause analysis across hardware, firmware, drivers, and operating systems using logs, traces, telemetry, debuggers, and diagnostic tools.
- Drive hardware bring-up, software and firmware integration, validation, manufacturing readiness, and release execution across the consumer-product lifecycle.
- Provide technical guidance to engineers, technical leads, and management while communicating design decisions, risks, progress, and tradeoffs.
- Collaborate with hardware, validation, manufacturing, quality, program management, silicon vendors, component suppliers, and other external partners.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and 4+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in C, C++, or C#, or equivalent experience.
- Ability to understand complex and unfamiliar code and experience with technologies such as SPI, USB, I2C, I3C, UART, kernel or Windows internals, Windows or Linux drivers, UEFI, WDF, KMDF, or UMDF.
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud background check.
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Preferred: 5+ years of firmware development or qualifying Keyboard, Mouse, Touch, Pen, or Touchpad firmware experience across operating systems or platforms.
- Preferred: experience with hardware bring-up, factory manufacturing, subsystem or product development, and multiple consumer-product releases.
- Preferred: C/C++ design and coding skills, hands-on Rust experience, system or device driver development, and debugging across multiple subsystems and organizations.
- Preferred: ability to work independently through ambiguity, communicate cross-functionally, and travel domestically and internationally.
