Responsibilities
- Own and govern the software architecture for a globally distributed microservices platform deployed across centralized, cloud, and constrained edge environments.
- Maintain and evolve approximately 25 core Java microservices plus supporting and integration services.
- Define architecture for service boundaries, contracts, data flows, event patterns, deployment topologies, node roles, observability, fault tolerance, and service recovery.
- Lead technical design for transactional, authorization, master-data, health/status, internationalization, matching, peripheral, and device-oriented services.
- Lead integration architecture for government, commercial, identity, travel, manifest, and partner-system interfaces.
- Ensure deployments remain remotely observable, supportable, maintainable, resilient, and fieldable.
- Guide multiple development teams through design reviews, technical debt reduction, modernization planning, roadmap sequencing, readiness reviews, and major incident analysis.
- Collaborate with cloud, network, security, data, field engineering, and operations teams, with domestic and/or international travel potentially required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field, with four additional years of experience accepted in place of the degree.
- At least 12 years of software engineering experience, including significant software architecture experience with distributed or mission-critical systems.
- At least five years architecting production microservices-based platforms and experience serving as technical authority over a multi-service ecosystem.
- Experience guiding multiple development teams and reviewing architecture across service boundaries.
- Deep hands-on expertise with Java on modern JDKs, Linux-based production environments, and distributed service design and operational patterns.
- Strong experience with MongoDB, Elasticsearch/Logstash, RabbitMQ or equivalent messaging platforms, and service discovery, orchestration, and secrets technologies such as Consul, Nomad, Vault, or Kubernetes.
- Experience designing resilient, observable, secure, globally distributed systems operating across constrained edge and cloud-heavy environments with variable connectivity.
- Ability to architect authorization, user administration, remote support, lifecycle management, graceful degradation, and diagnosability.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to create design artifacts and clearly present architecture decisions.
- Active TS/SCI clearance with polygraph is required.
- Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree, Vue.js and frontend architecture experience, hybrid-cloud deployments, external government or partner integrations, device and peripheral platforms, Nomad/Consul/Vault production experience, low-downtime upgrades, Elasticsearch search use cases, offline synchronization, modernization of monoliths, biometric or image-processing components, internationalized systems, operational analytics, and distributed-system CI/CD and release experience.
