Base Salary

$160k - $180k/yr

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a subject-matter expert for database architecture, performance, and complex technical problem solving.
  • Set technical direction for scalable data solutions in partnership with Product Management, Engineering, and Site Reliability.
  • Drive cross-functional projects from design through delivery while addressing upstream and downstream impacts.
  • Mentor engineers, review code and database changes, and raise engineering standards.
  • Guide adoption of modern development practices and lead efforts to reduce technical debt.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and determine which should be adopted.
  • Monitor database health and performance using Splunk, Datadog, and Grafana to proactively address risks.
  • Design data models and schemas, tune queries and indexes, and troubleshoot high-availability SQL Server systems.
  • Diagnose production capacity and contention issues involving locks, latches, TempDB, and transaction management.
  • Plan for data growth and horizontal and vertical infrastructure scalability.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of hands-on production experience with Microsoft SQL Server as a subject-matter expert.
  • Deep expertise in logical and physical data modeling, schema design, normalization, partitioning, and indexing for OLTP workloads.
  • Advanced proficiency with T-SQL, stored procedure optimization, execution plan analysis, and query tuning at scale.
  • Hands-on experience managing and troubleshooting terabyte-scale SQL Server databases with billions of rows and sustained throughput exceeding 100,000 transactions per second.
  • Experience resolving production capacity and contention issues, including lock and latch contention, TempDB performance, and transaction management.
  • Experience designing for horizontal and vertical scalability and anticipating data growth.
  • Strong knowledge of data security practices including encryption, access controls, and auditing.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex high-availability systems, influence cross-functional partners, communicate trade-offs clearly, and operate independently through ambiguity.
  • Familiarity with MongoDB, Cassandra, or DynamoDB is preferred.
  • Experience with AWS RDS, Aurora, or MongoDB Atlas is preferred.
