Responsibilities
- Lead the design and implementation of highly available, resilient, cost-efficient distributed systems serving millions of users.
- Architect systems handling more than 1M requests per second while maintaining sub-50ms latency, 99.99% availability, and strong consistency.
- Drive technical strategy for platform evolution, microservices architecture, API design, and third-party integration.
- Build platform abstractions, developer tools, SDKs, and systems that enable ML and product teams to iterate rapidly.
- Lead the transition toward Dual-rail resiliency for mission-critical payment and pricing flows.
- Partner with Product, Data Science, Ops, directors, vice presidents, and external partners on scalable platform solutions.
- Drive architecture reviews, reduce systemic technical debt, and improve observability and incident response.
- Define organization-wide standards and frameworks for testing, monitoring, alerting, developer velocity, and engineering practices.
Requirements
- 10+ years of professional experience in backend development and large-scale distributed systems.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- Demonstrated ability to lead organization-wide development and adoption of frameworks, coding practices, and technical strategy.
- Experience anticipating architectural problems or opportunities and addressing them with leadership before business impact.
- Track record of leading large-scale engineering projects from inception and requirements gathering through global productionization.
- Expertise defining standards for testing, monitoring, and alerting and overseeing complex incident management.
- Experience identifying architectural gaps and creating organization-wide frameworks that reduce technical debt and improve developer velocity.
- Demonstrated ability to build strategic relationships and rally internal stakeholders and external partners around a technical vision.
- Preferred expert-level proficiency in Go, Java, or Python.
- Preferred experience with real-time marketplace platforms, developer tools, SDKs, abstractions, Flink, Kafka, GCP, and Kubernetes.
- Preferred experience serving as a technical brand ambassador to internal and external technical communities.
Benefits
- Base salary for San Francisco and Sunnyvale, California roles is USD $267,000-$297,000 per year.
- Eligible full-time employees may participate in Uber’s bonus program and may receive equity awards or other compensation.
