Base Salary
$243k - $295k/yr
Responsibilities
- Design and implement database engine features covering indexing, storage formats, WAL, replication protocols, sharding, and query-planner enhancements.
- Build control-plane capabilities for elastic scaling, autonomous healing, and zero-downtime schema or tenant moves across global regions.
- Profile and optimize critical code paths using kernel-level tracing and advanced performance tooling to reduce tail latency.
- Lead design reviews, performance benchmarks, failure drills, post-incident retrospectives, and engineering best practices.
- Develop automation for testing, rollout safety, observability, and autoscaling.
- Mentor engineers and share database expertise across Storage, Platform, and product teams.
- Contribute patches, presentations, and technical direction to open-source database communities.
Requirements
- At least 6 years of experience in software engineering or a relevant field.
- Deep experience building and operating large-scale distributed databases or storage engines such as PostgreSQL, MySQL/InnoDB, RocksDB, Spanner, Aurora, or AlloyDB.
- Deep knowledge of database internals including B-trees, MVCC, WAL, query optimization, and buffer management.
- Strong programming skills in C, C++, Go, or Rust.
- Hands-on experience with consensus algorithms such as Raft and Paxos and with multi-region replication models providing strong consistency and high availability.
- Experience shipping high-QPS, low-latency services on Kubernetes or Nomad with comprehensive observability.
- Ability to turn ambiguous product requirements into technical roadmaps and influence cross-functional stakeholders.
- Commitment to automation, rigorous testing, and data-driven reliability and efficiency improvements.
- Preferred qualifications include upstream contributions to PostgreSQL, RocksDB, or other open-source databases, and familiarity with disaggregated storage, HTAP workloads, or custom query languages.
