Responsibilities
- Own and drive major technical initiatives for eBay’s distributed database platforms.
- Design, implement, test, deploy, and operate critical database components and capabilities.
- Solve complex problems involving storage, transactions, replication, consensus, geo-distribution, concurrency, scalability, availability, and performance.
- Contribute to architecture, technical tradeoffs, design reviews, code reviews, prototyping, benchmarking, and production support.
- Diagnose difficult production issues across software, storage, networking, and distributed-system boundaries and drive long-term resolution.
- Mentor engineers, raise engineering standards, and promote strong practices in architecture, code quality, testing, observability, automation, and operational readiness.
- Partner with architects, engineers, product managers, engineering leaders, customers, and globally distributed teams to translate workloads and requirements into platform solutions.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and open-source solutions and communicate technical designs and decisions clearly.
- Use AI coding agents to deliver production-quality software and improve engineering velocity while maintaining quality and maintainability.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field with 10+ years of experience, or a PhD with equivalent experience building large-scale distributed systems.
- Significant hands-on experience designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed databases, storage systems, or data infrastructure.
- Strong expertise in distributed systems and database architecture, including consensus, replication, consistency models, partitioning, fault tolerance, high availability, and geo-distribution.
- Strong knowledge of database internals, including storage and buffer management, write-ahead logging, multi-version concurrency control, lock management, query planning and execution, indexing, and database engines.
- Expertise in transaction management, isolation levels, concurrency control, deadlock detection, crash recovery, replication, and high-availability or failover strategies.
- Understanding of distributed-system failure modes, network partitions, partial failures, RAFT/PAXOS, and availability, consistency, and performance tradeoffs.
- Strong computer science fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, concurrency, networking, operating systems, and software architecture.
- Advanced programming experience in C++, Java, Python, Scala, or equivalent languages.
- Experience with object-oriented design, distributed programming, and large-scale relational or NoSQL database systems.
- Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and modern infrastructure or cloud-native environments.
- Demonstrated technical leadership, ownership of complex initiatives, architectural decision-making, mentoring, and cross-team collaboration.
- Ability to write high-quality architecture and design documents, build consensus, and communicate effectively across globally distributed teams.
- Experience building production-grade software with AI coding agents and providing them with appropriate context, specifications, constraints, and validation criteria.
- Hands-on experience delivering production software using AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, or similar tools.
- Ability to collaborate across teams and locations including Bengaluru, the U.S., China, and Ireland.
