Responsibilities
- Own the Agentic Orchestration domain’s architecture, including boundaries, contracts, data flows, and architectural decisions.
- Pair with engineers to design and build software across the domain’s codebases, spending approximately half of the role writing code.
- Lead cross-domain technical initiatives and collaborate with principal engineers and architects on complex technical problems.
- Define and drive adoption of engineering principles and practices for agent-based systems, including the use of AI coding tools.
- Evaluate technical tradeoffs such as build versus buy, platform consolidation, deterministic versus agentic designs, and speed versus operability.
- Create diagrams, models, and narratives that support shared understanding among engineering, product, design, and leadership stakeholders.
- Coach tech leads and senior engineers and strengthen technical leadership across the teams.
Requirements
- 10+ years of software development experience, including significant experience as a principal, staff, or architect-level engineer on distributed production systems.
- Demonstrated ability to establish engineering principles, maintain system coherence and quality, and get teams to adopt those principles.
- Extensive experience with pair or mob programming and a belief that it is a primary software design and development practice.
- Hands-on use of AI-based development tools, coding agents, and LLM-assisted workflows.
- Deep understanding of complex systems, including emergent behavior, feedback loops, coupling, and sociotechnical architecture.
- Strong judgment in uncertain environments and the ability to explain technical reasoning to engineers and non-engineers.
- Strong visual communication skills using diagrams and models to create shared understanding.
- Deep expertise in at least two programming languages, ideally including Java or another JVM language, with the ability to become productive in unfamiliar languages.
- Understanding of LLMs and agents and how to design reliable systems around them.
- Ability to influence without authority across teams, domains, and seniority levels, with clear English communication.
- Experience with Temporal or similar workflow orchestration platforms is a plus.
- Experience building conversational AI, LLM-based agents, or agent orchestration systems is a plus.
- Experience with messaging, voice, or communications platforms at scale is a plus.
- Familiarity with event-driven architectures and cloud-native infrastructure on AWS or GCP is a plus.
- Experience with platform consolidation or migration across several products is a plus.
- Familiarity with domain-driven design, architecture decision records, or C4-style modelling is a plus.
