Responsibilities
- Own the technical vision and multi-year architecture for build orchestration, build systems, and containerized build environments.
- Define build system selection and migration strategies, remote execution and caching, hermeticity, reproducibility, and developer tradeoffs.
- Improve build speed, reliability, reproducibility, debuggability, and usability across local development and CI workflows.
- Solve large-scale C/C++ build issues involving dependency graphs, linking, toolchains, sysroots, and incremental correctness.
- Define consistent, isolated, reproducible containerized build environments and their lifecycle and upgrade paths.
- Set operational standards for build infrastructure, including observability, incident response, change management, and capacity planning.
- Partner with engineering management on roadmaps and influence teams and leaders on tooling direction, migrations, and shared standards.
- Establish engineering metrics for developer experience and build performance, mentor engineers, review designs, and represent the team in technical forums.
Requirements
- Significant software engineering experience in infrastructure, developer productivity, build systems, or platform engineering.
- Experience setting technical direction for platforms used by many engineering teams and leading multi-team or multi-quarter initiatives.
- Deep expertise in build systems and toolchains, dependency management, build-graph correctness, incremental and reproducible builds, remote execution and caching, artifact generation, and build isolation.
- Hands-on experience with build systems such as Make, CMake, Buck, Bazel, or custom build orchestration tools, including production build-system evolution or migration.
- Deep experience with large-scale C/C++ builds, dependency pruning, static and dynamic linking, toolchain management, and reproducible containerized builds.
- Strong command of Linux development environments, Docker, and maintaining consistent build images and execution environments at scale.
- Experience designing and operating CI pipelines and integrating build tooling into continuous integration workflows.
- Experience using engineering metrics to improve build performance, reliability, and developer experience and justify investment.
- Excellent communication and written design skills, cross-organizational influence, and experience mentoring engineers and raising technical standards.
