Responsibilities

  • Lead large, cross-cutting backend initiatives spanning multiple teams and remove systemic product and infrastructure bottlenecks.
  • Drive modular backend, service, data, and platform architecture, including production modernization of monolithic and legacy backends.
  • Define standards for APIs, contracts, compatibility, schema evolution, testing, security, performance, observability, operability, maintainability, and production practices.
  • Establish shared patterns for dependency management, data ownership, eventing, failure isolation, service maturity, and operational documentation.
  • Guide Go service and Kubernetes operating practices and support Rust adoption where it addresses systems, security, performance, or supply-chain needs.
  • Participate in on-call and incident response, serve as a technical escalation point, and turn incidents into architectural and operational improvements.
  • Partner with Product and Engineering leadership on platform roadmaps and investment trade-offs without relying on formal authority.
  • Mentor Senior and Intermediate engineers and improve technical capability through reviews, documentation, reusable patterns, and technical debt reduction.
  • Lead adoption of AI-assisted and agentic engineering workflows, including quality, security, privacy, and operational guardrails.

Requirements

  • Sustained technical leadership experience across more than one team or a broad product area.
  • Deep backend architecture and production experience with complex applications, services, or platforms, including APIs, service platforms, data systems, modular monoliths, or shared backend components.
  • Experience modernizing a monolith or legacy backend architecture in production using modular approaches such as bounded contexts, package encapsulation, ports and adapters, service extraction, or event-driven boundaries.
  • Ability to create alignment through clear written proposals and decision records and influence without formal authority.
  • Strong product judgment balancing customer outcomes, delivery speed, technical health, reliability, and long-term platform investment.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and shaping standards through code review, documentation, and example.
  • Production experience with AI-assisted or agentic engineering workflows and the ability to evaluate and improve team adoption.
  • Helpful experience with Go services and APIs at scale; Kubernetes and cloud-native operations; Rust; Ruby/Rails modularization; PostgreSQL scaling, partitioning, queues, messaging, or distributed systems; security-sensitive products or software supply chains; and varied SaaS, single-tenant, self-managed, or air-gapped deployment constraints.

Benefits

  • Remote-first work arrangement; all GitLab roles are remote, subject to location-based eligibility requirements.
  • Benefits supporting health, finances, and well-being.
  • Flexible paid time off.
  • Team Member Resource Groups.
  • Equity compensation and an Employee Stock Purchase Plan.

About GitLab

1,001-5,000 employees

GitLab is the Intelligent Orchestration Platform where software teams and their AI agents stay in flow to amplify their capacity for innovation. Together, they automate repetitive tasks to plan, build, secure, test, deploy and maintain software. With GitLab, software teams spend less time on coordination overhead and more time on the next big idea. GitLab Duo Agent Platform provides AI agents that automate tasks across the software lifecycle. Agents handle code generation, security analysis, code review, CI/CD troubleshooting, and custom workflows — while teams maintain control through enterprise governance. Build what's next with us.
