Responsibilities

  • Own a research project from problem framing and related-work review through method development, rigorous offline and online evaluation, and publication preparation.
  • Design, build, train, and test machine learning models for areas including reinforcement learning, sequential decision-making, and personalization.
  • Convert research prototypes into production-quality code and working pipelines on Lyft’s data and machine learning infrastructure.
  • Partner with Product Managers, Data Scientists, and ML Engineers to connect research questions to business contexts.
  • Analyze experimental and observational data and communicate findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Participate in code and specification reviews to maintain code quality and share knowledge.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical field, returning to the program after the internship, with graduation between December 2027 and Summer 2028.
  • Demonstrated machine learning research through publications, preprints, or substantial research projects.
  • Strong foundation in reinforcement learning and sequential decision-making, particularly delayed or long-horizon rewards.
  • Grounding in causal inference and counterfactual evaluation.
  • Familiarity with PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX and strong programming skills in Python or a similar language.
  • Ability to turn research ML papers into working code and learn new concepts and technologies quickly.
  • Strong problem-solving, independent research, collaboration, and oral and written communication skills.
  • Preferred qualifications include publications at venues such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, KDD, WWW, RecSys, or AAAI; experience with offline reinforcement learning, off-policy evaluation, logged interaction data, recommender systems, or personalization; large-scale ML workflows using Spark or SQL; and online experimentation or A/B testing.
