Responsibilities
- Architect and build scalable, secure, fault-tolerant systems supporting millions of daily transactions and 99.99% uptime.
- Design and implement backend-led full-stack features using FastAPI, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, and React where needed.
- Build documented REST and asynchronous APIs with authentication, authorization, validation, pagination, and error handling.
- Design database schemas, indexes, and query patterns for read- and write-heavy workloads.
- Build and operate batch and streaming data pipelines using ETL/ELT, Airflow, Spark, Kafka, dbt, and cloud data warehouses.
- Deploy and operate services on AWS using managed services, containers, and infrastructure-as-code.
- Optimize frontend rendering, API latency, database queries, caching, indexing, partitioning, and parallelization.
- Implement automated testing, CI/CD, monitoring, alerting, and rollback strategies.
- Contribute to technology planning, sprint planning, retrospectives, design reviews, and technical decision-making.
- Mentor and coach engineers, conduct code reviews, and help establish engineering standards and career growth paths.
- Coordinate with product managers, data engineers, geospatial analysts, and other stakeholders.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
- At least 7 years of software development experience with a record of deploying and operating production systems.
- Experience designing highly scalable distributed systems with high availability and low latency.
- Strong backend and API engineering experience in Python and FastAPI, including REST or GraphQL APIs, microservices, and relational databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL.
- Hands-on experience building and operating applications on AWS; GCP or Azure exposure is a plus.
- Understanding of system and API design, relational and NoSQL databases, caching, and asynchronous or event-driven patterns.
- Strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, testing, CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, and observability.
- Strong knowledge of Scrum or Agile frameworks such as Kanban and Crystal.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills for working on large, complex systems.
- Preferred experience building and operating large-scale data pipelines with ETL/ELT, Apache Spark, Airflow, Kafka, dbt, cloud data warehouses, and SQL.
- Good-to-have experience with LLM-powered features, retrieval systems, vector databases, embeddings, tool or function calling, and prompt engineering.
- Good-to-have GIS or geospatial development experience with PostGIS, spatial queries, geospatial formats, and geospatial libraries.
- Familiarity with mapping and visualization libraries, distributed execution frameworks, cloud-native practices, Kubernetes, and Terraform.
