Responsibilities
- Drive the architecture and evolution of ETL and data-processing systems that ingest customer product catalogs.
- Design systems for large, variable datasets with complex schemas, transformations, validation rules, dependencies, and imperfect source data.
- Identify and eliminate bottlenecks across ingestion, transformation, persistence, indexing, and retrieval to improve throughput and latency.
- Design horizontally scalable distributed systems with correctness, idempotency, fault tolerance, retries, and recovery guarantees.
- Partner with product and engineering leadership on technical direction, foundational investments, scale, and performance planning.
- Mentor senior engineers, conduct architecture reviews, and enable high-quality development across teams.
- Set technical standards for backend scalability, resiliency, observability, and maintainability.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives and help shape the long-term technical vision, culture, hiring, onboarding, and growth strategies of the engineering organization.
Requirements
- 8+ years of software development experience building and operating scalable, reliable production systems.
- Strong experience designing and operating complex ETL pipelines, data-processing platforms, or other high-throughput data-intensive systems.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems concepts including concurrency, partitioning, consistency, idempotency, retries, failure recovery, and horizontal scaling.
- Experience with performance engineering, including profiling systems, identifying bottlenecks, understanding resource utilization, and improving throughput and latency.
- Experience working with large datasets and designing efficient transformation, persistence, indexing, and retrieval approaches.
- Deep understanding of computer science fundamentals including algorithms, data structures, networking, and databases.
- Proven experience designing and scaling distributed systems with emphasis on performance, observability, reliability, and fault tolerance.
- Strong architectural judgment and the ability to make technical decisions affecting multiple teams and systems.
- Demonstrated ability to influence and mentor senior engineers, guide teams through ambiguity, and improve engineering practices.
- Experience with data engineering, data ingestion platforms, product catalogs, e-commerce data, search systems, or similar domains is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with Python, Django, Kubernetes, PostgreSQL, OpenSearch, and AWS is strongly preferred, with analogous experience also considered.
- Strong ownership, communication, collaboration, autonomy, and ability to work in a fast-paced product-driven environment.
Benefits
- Remote-first work arrangement with flexibility to work from anywhere most productively.
- Ability to work anywhere in the world for up to three months.
- Parental leave program.
- Work-from-home stipend.
