Responsibilities
- Build and maintain custom software and automation for operating MySQL at Shopify’s scale.
- Operate the database fleet, including virtual machine management, MySQL configuration and performance tuning, capacity work, and resiliency testing.
- Own the software supporting connection management, backups, and failover.
- Plan and execute carefully controlled changes to critical systems and assess potential failure modes.
- Participate in a shared on-call rotation for Shopify’s database platform.
- Support the continued evolution of the platform’s data layer.
Requirements
- Have a strong foundation in infrastructure and large-scale distributed systems with real production ownership.
- Demonstrate software engineering ability by writing and maintaining production code.
- Have hands-on operational experience with stateful systems, including configuration and performance tuning, capacity planning, failure testing, and incident response.
- Show exceptional attention to detail and an instinct for de-risking changes to critical systems.
- Be comfortable carrying a pager and exercising judgment about when to act or escalate.
- Use AI tooling effectively to accelerate work and address gaps.
- Be prepared to complete a live pair-programming interview using a personal IDE.
