Base Salary
$165k - $229k/yr
Responsibilities
- Lead architectural design, multi-region high availability, business continuity, and disaster recovery solutions for Checkr’s multi-cloud database fleet.
- Own the long-term database architecture vision and strategy and communicate it to engineers and leadership.
- Mentor and grow engineers while establishing fleet-wide database governance and performance standards.
- Provision, scale, and maintain production, staging, and sandbox cloud databases using Terraform and Terragrunt.
- Optimize PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MongoDB performance across queries, schemas, connections, and instances.
- Partner with Site Reliability Engineering to build observability, automated alerting, and diagnostic tooling.
- Automate operational toil, maintenance, schema migrations, and backup lifecycle policies.
- Lead diagnosis, resolution, and post-incident reviews for critical database alerts and outages.
- Ensure protection of sensitive data through encryption and security-first architecture.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 10+ years of experience designing, administering, and scaling relational and non-relational database storage architectures in production.
- Deep expertise managing and tuning MongoDB and PostgreSQL or MySQL database topologies at high volume and scale.
- Understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including data structures and software design principles.
- Extensive hands-on experience with AWS database and storage services, including RDS, Aurora, ElastiCache, MongoDB Atlas, and S3.
- Experience automating cloud infrastructure and database operations using Terraform, Terragrunt, and modern scripting languages.
- Proven ability to guide engineering teams through database schema design, zero-downtime migrations such as gh-ost, and security compliance standards.
- Strong technical leadership, ownership, urgency, resilience, and ability to operate through ambiguity.
