
Staff ML Engineer, Fine Tuning - Slack

Responsibilities
- Design and execute fine-tuning strategies for large language models and deep learning architectures for Slack NLP tasks.
- Own the end-to-end model training lifecycle, including data curation, training infrastructure, hyperparameter optimization, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring.
- Build and maintain scalable fine-tuning pipelines on GPU infrastructure.
- Ship fine-tuned models to production that serve real users at scale.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and frontend engineers to build new product features.
- Lead or heavily contribute to large, high-impact cross-functional projects.
- Lead technical architecture discussions and drive technical decisions.
- Mentor engineers and conduct deep code reviews.
- Improve engineering standards, tooling, and processes.
Requirements
- 5+ years of hands-on experience training and fine-tuning deep learning models in NLP or a closely related domain such as speech, information retrieval, or multimodal systems.
- 5+ years of experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX.
- Demonstrated experience shipping fine-tuned models to production for real users at scale.
- Experience with one or more of PHP, Python, Ruby, Go, C, Scala, or Java.
- Ability to measure success for complex machine learning and AI products using analytical and data-driven methods.
- Experience leading technical architecture discussions and driving technical decisions.
- Ability to write understandable, testable, maintainable code.
- Strong communication skills and ability to explain complex technical concepts to designers, support teams, and other specialists.
- Preferred experience with recommendation systems or search.
- Preferred familiarity with inference optimization techniques including quantization, pruning, speculative decoding, and compilation.
- Preferred experience with retrieval-augmented generation and hybrid retrieval/generation systems.
- Preferred broad experience across NLP, machine learning, and generative AI, including structured, unstructured, and knowledge-graph data in RAG solutions.

- The stated base salary range is $197,300–$313,700 annually; select San Francisco and New York City metropolitan locations have a $237,700–$344,700 annual range.
