Base Salary
$220k - $263k/yr
Responsibilities
- Find and fix database performance and scaling problems.
- Own the schema and data model for analytical data.
- Design and build a tiered analytics architecture spanning a system of record, low-latency serving tier, and batch/ML tier.
- Decide where workloads run across architecture tiers using measured latency, cost, and isolation benchmarks.
- Build observability into the data layer so issues surface early.
- Partner with the ingestion team to keep read and write paths coherent as schemas evolve.
- Write code while shaping the multi-quarter direction of the analytics platform.
Requirements
- Deep production experience operating a database or analytical store under concurrent, customer-facing load.
- Strong SQL skills and a solid understanding of columnar and OLAP execution.
- Backend engineering experience and the ability to read and modify a real Java codebase.
- Experience designing or materially shaping a multi-tier data platform and defending architecture decisions with measurements.
- Lakehouse experience with Databricks, Spark, Delta Lake, Iceberg, or comparable technologies is strongly preferred.
- Experience designing schemas for wide, semi-structured event data such as nested objects, maps, and JSON is preferred.
- Streaming ingestion experience with Kafka or similar technologies is preferred.
- Experience leading a migration or major re-architecture with cost and latency analysis is preferred.
- ClickHouse experience, connection-pool and JDBC-level tuning, feature-flagged query-engine rollouts, or open-source query-engine/tooling contributions are nice to have.
