Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate core components of the next-generation Serverless Elasticsearch offering.
- Improve concurrent and consistent indexing across multiple machines.
- Maintain cluster coordination while nodes join, leave, and redistribute data, preserving system safety and liveness.
- Scale Elasticsearch across larger numbers of shards, nodes, and petabytes of data.
- Investigate performance and concurrency issues and propose solutions.
- Own operational investigations through successful resolution of performance or stability issues.
- Support support engineers with complex technical problems.
- Own projects end-to-end, including technical design and collaboration with other engineers.
- Manage projects involving multiple engineers.
Requirements
- Deep background in distributed systems and consensus algorithms.
- Strong core Java skills, including Java standard-library data structures, concurrency constructs, and newer language features.
- Deep technical proficiency in algorithms.
- Experience building large-scale distributed systems rather than only using off-the-shelf services.
- Experience building and debugging complex, broadly impactful features running across multiple machines.
- Ability to own projects from beginning to end and collaborate on required components.
- Experience managing projects involving multiple engineers.
- Proven use of AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimize code while retaining ownership of outcomes.
- Ability to collaborate across functions and teams and transition between projects, codebases, or teams as priorities change.
- Ability to work autonomously and drive decisions and results in a distributed team through asynchronous, direct, and transparent communication.
- Bonus: experience with data stores, search, analytics, Lucene, the JDK, or asynchronous event-driven network frameworks such as Netty.
