Responsibilities
- Own backend features end to end across cart, checkout, order, billing, and authentication systems.
- Design, develop, deploy, monitor, and support reliable backend services, integrations, APIs, workflows, and application logic.
- Build and maintain billing, invoicing, transaction flows, invoice generation, and related system integrations.
- Design, query, and maintain relational databases and data models with attention to correctness, performance, and reliability.
- Translate business and product requirements into clear technical specifications and identify dependencies, edge cases, failure scenarios, and unknowns.
- Use AI-assisted engineering and agentic tools daily while critically validating generated code and remaining accountable for shipped results.
- Write automated tests, validate happy paths and failure scenarios, and provide evidence that changes are ready for production.
- Review code and technical changes, identify design, maintainability, security, and reliability risks, and provide actionable feedback.
- Work safely in unfamiliar or legacy codebases and make incremental improvements without unnecessary rewrites.
- Participate in on-call rotation, respond to incidents, contribute to root-cause analysis, and complete follow-up actions.
- Mentor engineers, explain technical decisions, review backend designs and code, and coordinate dependencies across teams.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience in backend software engineering and production systems.
- At least 5 years of experience with Perl or PHP.
- At least 5 years of experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MariaDB.
- At least 5 years of experience with billing and invoicing systems.
- Strong understanding of backend architecture, application logic, APIs, and data-driven systems.
- Experience building and supporting transaction-heavy systems such as cart, checkout, ordering, billing, or authentication platforms.
- Strong SQL skills and experience with relational data models.
- Experience writing automated tests and validating production changes before deployment.
- Ability to understand unfamiliar code and troubleshoot issues across multiple parts of a production system.
- Experience participating in on-call rotations and responding to production incidents.
- Hands-on experience using AI-assisted engineering tools in day-to-day development.
- Clear written communication and ability to work effectively in a remote, distributed team across multiple time zones.
- Preferred experience with payment, billing, invoicing, or financial system integrations.
- Preferred experience with authentication or identity systems, complex customer transaction and order workflows, managed hosting, cloud platforms, SaaS, high-availability services, complex or legacy backend systems, and mentoring engineers.
