Base Salary
$191k - $286k/yr
Responsibilities
- Own the migration governance framework, including review workflows, CI gate checks, automated rollback procedures, and fleet-wide deployment sequencing.
- Drive database architecture and scaling strategy across multi-region replication, capacity planning, sharding, partitioning, and observability.
- Own fleet-level database reliability and performance through replication monitoring, query optimization, vacuum and connection tuning, and alerting.
- Build self-service migration and database tooling, including dry runs, schema-diff previews, health checks, and performance-regression detection.
- Lead database incident response, post-incident reviews, and systemic reliability improvements.
- Partner with Security and Compliance on SOC 2, GDPR, data residency, access controls, audit logging, encryption, and data lifecycle policies.
- Represent database engineering in vendor evaluations, build-versus-buy decisions, and technology strategy discussions.
- Shape the database engineering function by defining its operating model, setting the hiring bar, mentoring engineers, and establishing database best practices.
Requirements
- 10+ years of hands-on experience in database administration, database reliability engineering, or infrastructure engineering with PostgreSQL as the primary database.
- Demonstrated staff-level scope, including setting standards across teams.
- Expert PostgreSQL knowledge, including WAL mechanics, vacuum tuning, logical and physical replication, partitioning strategies, and production debugging.
- Experience building migration governance systems, including frameworks, tooling, and organizational processes.
- Experience architecting multi-region, highly available database infrastructure with replication topologies, failover automation, and data consistency trade-offs.
- Deep database observability experience using Datadog, pganalyze, or custom instrumentation.
- Experience leading production major-version upgrades or sharding initiatives with zero downtime.
- Ability to influence technical direction across teams without direct authority through RFCs and standards.
- Proficiency with Azure Database for PostgreSQL, GCP Cloud SQL, or AWS RDS/Aurora and infrastructure-as-code using Terraform or Pulumi.
- Clear communication across technical and organizational audiences.
- Strong software engineering skills in Python, Go, or a similar language are a bonus.
- Exposure to vector databases, embedding storage, Redis, Elasticsearch, or Kafka is a bonus.
- Experience building or leading a database engineering function from scratch is a bonus.
