Responsibilities
- Apply deep PostgreSQL expertise to diagnose production performance problems and lead issues from root cause through remediation
- Evaluate cluster topology changes and drive architectural transformations, including migration from synchronous to asynchronous I/O patterns
- Build benchmarking and regression-detection infrastructure that provides database performance signals before production deployment
- Define and own database performance contracts covering latency targets, throughput expectations, and SLA boundaries
- Lead query and schema reviews for high-risk changes and own performance incident response and post-incident improvements
- Mentor senior engineers on PostgreSQL internals, query analysis, execution plans, and schema-performance implications
- Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation for continuous operational support and incident response
Requirements
- 10+ years of production engineering experience with deep specialization in PostgreSQL performance and transactional systems at scale
- Deep knowledge of PostgreSQL internals, including MVCC, autovacuum behavior, query planner statistics, locking semantics, and long-running query interactions
- Experience diagnosing and remediating database performance issues in regulated or correctness-critical environments without compromising data integrity
- Experience building performance benchmarking, regression-detection, CI-integrated performance gate, and observability pipeline systems
- Experience with cluster topology changes, connection pooling, read replicas, partitioning or sharding, and PostgreSQL parameter tuning for high-concurrency transactional workloads
- Track record of leading cross-team technical initiatives through influence and producing durable documentation
- Strong written and verbal communication and the ability to operate independently through ambiguous problems
- Experience supporting 24/7 production on-call rotations and resolving incidents outside standard business hours
- Preferred experience with Aurora PostgreSQL at scale and managed PostgreSQL operational constraints
- Preferred experience with PgBouncer, PgDog, or equivalent connection-pooling middleware
- Preferred experience with asynchronous Python I/O using asyncio, asyncpg, or equivalent
- Familiarity with logical and physical sharding for transactional PostgreSQL workloads and OLTP versus OLAP workload boundaries
- Systems-level programming experience in Rust, Go, or C/C++
- Background in pharmacy benefit management, claims adjudication, healthcare data systems, or other regulated transactional environments
Benefits
- Hybrid work arrangement requiring 3 days in office, with offices in NYC, Denver, and the Charlotte, NC area
- Participation in a 24/7 on-call rotation
- Equal employment opportunity and anti-discrimination protections
