Responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end architecture of the team’s services, data flows, integration points, and failure modes.
- Design service boundaries, contracts, data ownership, migration paths, and scalable systems for autonomous development.
- Lead modernization of PHP monoliths and Java services using strangler patterns and low-risk, byte-compatible cutovers.
- Build understanding across grading, marketplace, CRM, payments, identity, and data/ETL systems to identify cross-system risks.
- Set standards for security, testing, observability, documentation, operational excellence, and incident response.
- Lead projects of moderate-to-significant scope across one-to-two-quarter delivery horizons.
- Coordinate engineers, stakeholders, and dependencies and communicate blockers and delays proactively.
- Mentor senior and mid-level engineers through design reviews, pairing, and feedback.
- Lead adoption of AI-assisted engineering, including coding-tool standards, guardrails, workflows, and impact measurement.
- Share AI-assisted engineering workflows, prompts, and agent configurations while coaching teams on verification and responsible use.
Requirements
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including technical leadership of multi-engineer, multi-quarter projects.
- Expert-level backend engineering in TypeScript/Node.js and/or Java, with effectiveness across TypeScript, Java 21, PHP, Python, and C# systems.
- Hands-on production experience across modern React/Next.js frontends, API and service layers, relational databases, and infrastructure.
- Experience modernizing legacy systems through strangler-fig migrations, monolith service extraction, or platform re-architecture under live traffic.
- Deep PostgreSQL and MySQL expertise covering data modeling, migrations, performance, and shared-database coupling.
- Strong distributed-systems fundamentals, including REST, GraphQL, gRPC, SQS, idempotency, service boundaries, and failure handling.
- Production AWS experience with ECS, Lambda, networking, and IAM, plus AWS CDK and/or Terraform infrastructure-as-code experience.
- Track record of improving testing strategy, observability, documentation, and incident response.
- Hands-on experience with AI coding assistants and agentic tools such as Claude Code, Copilot, or Cursor, including workflow integration and responsible verification.
- Excellent written and verbal communication with technical and business audiences.
- Preferred experience with frontend architecture at scale, design systems, micro-frontends, performance budgets, React Native/Expo, e-commerce, marketplaces, payments, consumer platforms, Snowflake, ETL pipelines, dimensional modeling, computer vision, Anthropic, OpenAI, retrieval-augmented generation, evals, or agent frameworks such as MCP.
