Responsibilities
- Design, build, test, and continuously improve Marqeta’s user interfaces and supporting backend services.
- Define and deliver project milestones, and potentially serve as a technical lead for team projects.
- Use customer and product stakeholder input to determine technical solutions and deliver customer value quickly.
- Mentor and support less-experienced engineers through guidance, feedback, and role modeling.
- Write clear, maintainable, reusable, efficient, and adaptable code with minimal defects.
- Lead design for medium components and features, participate in larger-feature design, and own significant system components.
- Design testable, debuggable software components with simple maintenance characteristics and logical APIs.
- Identify gaps, challenge existing approaches, and propose innovative solutions.
- Participate in on-call coverage.
Requirements
- 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience with a bachelor’s degree, or 3 years with a master’s degree, or a PhD with 8 years of experience; 8+ years of relevant experience may substitute for a degree.
- At least 2 years of backend experience in an object-oriented programming language.
- Experience with OAuth 2.0, JWTs, and user session management.
- Experience developing applications with the Java backend stack, Spring Boot, Kubernetes, and AWS.
- Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs.
- Experience with JavaScript and Node.js.
- Experience developing scalable microservices on cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and attention-to-detail skills.
- Experience with software engineering ecosystems involving CI/CD and containerized applications.
- Ability to communicate technical trade-offs, identify technical blind spots, and clarify ambiguity with cross-functional stakeholders.
- Preferred experience with Payments or Fintech.
- Preferred experience with modern frontend technologies such as React, Angular, VueJS, or NextJS.
- Preferred experience with highly available distributed systems, including sharding, replication, load balancing, and caching.
