Responsibilities
- Define multi-year technical direction and roadmaps for major platform areas across multiple teams.
- Make company-level build-versus-buy, platform-versus-feature, and architecture decisions.
- Design and lead foundational distributed services, data flows, APIs, integrations, shared libraries, and business-critical systems.
- Lead high-impact migrations and modernizations, including availability upgrades, language or framework moves, monolith decompositions, schema changes, and multi-region rollouts.
- Personally implement the highest-leverage and highest-risk engineering projects while setting strong technical examples.
- Own engineering outcomes for strategic customers and make senior technical decisions during critical production incidents.
- Mentor Senior and Staff engineers and help develop future Staff and Senior Staff engineers.
- Set organizational standards for testing, observability, security, developer productivity, code review, and operational maturity.
- Build internal tools, shared libraries, prompt libraries, agents, and AI-assisted workflows that improve engineering productivity.
- Partner with engineering managers, the CTO, and product leadership to translate strategy into execution.
- Participate in hiring calibration, senior IC development, customer conversations, vendor evaluations, partner integrations, and public engineering initiatives.
Requirements
- 12+ years of professional software engineering experience and a sustained track record operating at Staff level or higher.
- Demonstrated experience designing and shipping foundational systems used by multiple teams, including services, frameworks, data infrastructure, or shared platforms.
- Deep expertise in at least one modern backend stack such as Java/Spring, Node/TypeScript, Python, or Go, plus strong fluency in at least one additional stack.
- Strong systems-design expertise covering distributed systems, data modeling, consistency trade-offs, performance, scaling, and reliability under significant production load.
- Hands-on production expertise with AWS, GCP, or Azure, Kubernetes, and observability tools such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, or Grafana.
- Strong fluency with AI coding tools such as Claude Code or Copilot and demonstrated ability to accelerate individual and team productivity with them.
- Experience leading a team or organization through a significant architectural transition such as a high-availability migration, language or framework move, multi-region rollout, or monolith-to-services transition.
- Demonstrated success mentoring Senior and Staff engineers and materially contributing to their growth.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to defend technical positions before executive leadership.
