Responsibilities

  • Define and evolve architecture for customer-facing web applications, shared backend services, and CMS capabilities.
  • Provide technical leadership through architecture reviews, software design, hands-on development, code reviews, documentation, and mentoring.
  • Define and execute long-term technical strategy, architecture roadmaps, and platform evolution for CNN New Business.
  • Influence technical decisions across multiple engineering teams and partner with Business, Product, Design, and Editorial organizations.
  • Lead rapid prototyping and technical exploration for new product ideas and 0-to-1 development.
  • Establish engineering practices for architecture, code quality, testing, observability, reliability, security, and operational readiness.
  • Mentor engineers, support technical hiring, and elevate organizational technical capabilities.
  • Lead adoption of AI-assisted engineering practices and identify opportunities to use AI for developer productivity and customer experiences.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • 15+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years designing and building large-scale web applications and leading architecture for complex systems.
  • At least 2+ years defining and leading architecture design.
  • Strong full-stack experience with modern web technologies and frameworks, including JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML/CSS, Python, and Go.
  • Deep experience designing and implementing highly scalable web applications with client- and server-side technologies.
  • Strong understanding of reliability, availability, security, privacy, analytics, observability, and operational readiness.
  • Experience designing reusable components and platform capabilities for multiple consumer products and engineering teams.
  • Deep expertise in cloud-native architectures and experience designing, deploying, and operating systems in AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Solid knowledge of Operations, CI/CD, and DevOps.
  • Exceptional communication, collaboration, technical leadership, and mentorship skills.
