Responsibilities
- Own and evolve Robinhood’s Istio and Envoy service mesh architecture, including networking foundations for multi-region operation.
- Define the long-term Kubernetes compute platform direction, including cluster lifecycle, scheduling, control plane architecture, and resiliency.
- Redesign Terraform infrastructure provisioning into a scalable self-service platform for rapid region provisioning and developer autonomy.
- Diagnose and resolve issues in Kubernetes API machinery, etcd, Envoy xDS, and Terraform provider layers, contributing upstream when useful.
- Set technical direction across teams through architecture proposals, design reviews, and cross-functional alignment.
Requirements
- Deep hands-on expertise with Kubernetes internals, including the API server, controller reconciliation, etcd watch propagation, scheduler mechanics, and admission control.
- Deep source-level working knowledge of Istio and/or Envoy, including the xDS protocol and control-plane/data-plane debugging.
- Wire-level knowledge of HTTP/2 and gRPC, including connection management, flow control, stream multiplexing, and observability.
- Architectural-scale Terraform experience covering module design patterns, provider internals, remote state management, and multi-region provisioning.
- Production experience with Go or Python for infrastructure tooling and the ability to write structured, tested, operationally sound code.
- Proven ability to drive cross-functional architectural change across large or complex engineering organizations and influence without authority.
