Responsibilities
- Build and ship Android client features for WhatsApp with a focus on performance, reliability, and memory footprint.
- Own Android client architecture for payments, commerce, and money-centric services surfaces.
- Develop with Kotlin, Java, and the Android SDK while partnering with server and platform teams on API design.
- Solve difficult technical problems and identify technologies that address previously intractable problems.
- Set technical direction across multiple teams and own the architecture for a major product area.
- Lead organization-wide initiatives, resolve product and technical ambiguity, and drive engineering standards and quality.
- Mentor senior engineers and influence product, design, data science, operations, legal, compliance, and local operations partners.
- Shape technical strategy and product outcomes for WhatsApp Services in India.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 12 years of programming experience in a relevant language, or at least 8 years of experience with a PhD.
- Experience working cross-functionally to drive solutions and using data and analysis to explain technical problems.
- Experience driving large cross-functional or industry-wide engineering efforts and planning multi-year roadmaps.
- Experience mentoring and influencing executive stakeholders across organizations.
- Preferred experience building Android applications with Java or Kotlin using the Android SDK.
- Preferred experience with multithreading, mobile memory management, low-end device optimization, constrained networks, and app-size optimization.
- Preferred experience with India’s digital payments ecosystem, UPI, large-scale payment systems, monetization, commerce, or AI/ML products.
- Preferred experience establishing technical foundations for a zero-to-one organization, setting strategy for global multi-market products, and leading distributed teams.
- Preferred familiarity with messaging platforms, mobile-first consumer products, super-apps, or founder-led products.
- Preferred experience integrating AI tools, implementing responsible and ethical AI practices, and developing skills in prompt/context engineering and agent orchestration.
