Responsibilities
- Own backend features across VPS, Cloud Dedicated, storage, and bare-metal products from specification through implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring, and production support.
- Design and develop reliable backend services, integrations, application logic, APIs, data flows, and database-backed functionality.
- Translate requirements into technical specifications and identify dependencies, unknowns, and failure scenarios before implementation.
- Use AI-assisted and agentic engineering tools daily while critically validating generated code and remaining accountable for shipped changes.
- Write automated tests, validate happy paths and failure scenarios, and provide evidence that changes are production-ready.
- Review other engineers’ code and technical changes for design, maintainability, security, and reliability risks.
- Work in unfamiliar or legacy codebases, make incremental improvements, and improve testing and documentation.
- Participate in on-call rotation, respond to incidents, contribute to root-cause analysis, and complete follow-up actions.
- Mentor engineers, explain technical decisions, and coordinate dependencies across teams.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience in backend software engineering and production systems.
- At least 5 years of experience with Perl.
- At least 5 years of experience with PostgreSQL or a similar relational database.
- Strong understanding of backend architecture, application logic, APIs, data-driven systems, SQL, and relational data models.
- Experience building, testing, deploying, and supporting production software and validating production changes before deployment.
- Ability to understand unfamiliar code and troubleshoot issues across multiple parts of a production system.
- Experience participating in on-call rotations and responding to production incidents.
- Hands-on experience using AI-assisted engineering tools in day-to-day development.
- Clear written communication skills and ability to work effectively in a remote, distributed, multi-time-zone team.
- Preferred: at least 5 years of Linux server administration experience.
- Preferred: at least 5 years of KVM administration or virtualization experience.
- Preferred: experience with VPS, bare metal, storage, cloud infrastructure, managed hosting, high-availability services, complex or legacy backend systems, mentoring, and backend code and design review.
