Responsibilities
- Design and implement search functionality in a Scala ecommerce backend.
- Develop lexical, semantic, and hybrid retrieval capabilities.
- Build search-related libraries using ElasticSearch and MongoDB.
- Improve search relevance, quality measurement, and retrieval performance.
- Operate scalable multi-tenant search infrastructure as code on Kubernetes using Terraform.
- Test software components for usability, functionality, and performance.
- Collaborate with Product Management and DevOps and participate in a worldwide production on-call rotation.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience as a Software Engineer, including production experience on the JVM.
- Understanding of parallel and asynchronous programming and non-blocking I/O.
- Experience developing REST APIs and scalable architectures involving sharding, replication, load balancing, and failover.
- Interest in Scala and pragmatic functional programming patterns, or experience with another JVM language and willingness to learn Scala.
- Fluent English for international teamwork.
- Experience operating multi-tenant SaaS environments with tenant workload isolation.
- Knowledge of scalable event-driven architectures, queues, and notification topics.
- Interest in applying AI tools to improve work effectiveness.
- Preferred qualifications include ElasticSearch or OpenSearch search experience, inverted-index scoring and ranking knowledge, vector retrieval exposure, relevance metrics knowledge, infrastructure experience, Helm, Kubernetes, and Rust.
