Base Salary
$170k - $230k/yr
Responsibilities
- Own the architecture and evolution of the Android connectivity layer, including BLE transport, history sync, and firmware delivery.
- Define and refine communication protocols between WHOOP hardware and Android while maintaining alignment with iOS standards.
- Use Android Bluetooth expertise to manage GATT operations, bonding, reconnection, OEM-specific behavior, power management, and permissions.
- Build connectivity-health analysis systems and use member telemetry, metrics, and feedback to prioritize reliability and product improvements.
- Manage technical-debt, code-health, and testability priorities while improving architecture, test coverage, and engineering quality.
- Develop Android features and broader engineering patterns using Kotlin, mentor engineers, facilitate developer ramp-up, and influence cross-functional technical decisions.
- Participate in incident commander rotation and manage the Android release process, including app builds, variants, signing, Firebase testing, and Play Store submission.
- Represent Android Connectivity in bug triage, product syncs, firmware coordination, and other cross-functional forums.
- Assist the backend team with data contracts and collaborate across hardware, firmware, mobile, software, and backend teams.
Requirements
- Extensive professional experience building, testing, debugging, and delivering native Android applications, including consumer-facing apps controlling BLE devices.
- Track record of influencing engineers beyond one’s own team through architectural and platform design principles.
- Expert knowledge of Android application structure, components, lifecycle, Android Design Guidelines, concurrency, multithreading, Kotlin coroutines, and Flow.
- Strong experience with Jetpack Compose and modern declarative Android UI.
- Experience with Kotlin, Koin, Android Jetpack libraries including ViewModel, Flows, and Navigation, Room, Retrofit, and OkHttp.
- Experience designing modular architecture and dependency boundaries in large multi-module Gradle codebases, including MVI and MVVM patterns.
- Excellent knowledge of Android Studio, Gradle, CI systems, and Git-based feature work.
- Experience diagnosing complex or distributed systems involving firmware, mobile, and backend components.
- Experience communicating with RESTful backends and writing automated unit and UI tests.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills, including cross-functional problem solving, tradeoff definition, and optimization.
- Commitment to using AI tools responsibly while maintaining the same quality standards as personal contributions.
- Product-minded approach with empathy for the member experience and willingness to learn across Android and external systems.
Benefits
- U.S. base salary range of $170,000-$230,000, plus meaningful equity and benefits.
- Full-time role based in WHOOP’s Boston, Massachusetts office; relocation may be required.
