Responsibilities
- Set the technical direction for the team’s agentic systems, including orchestration and human-ownership boundaries.
- Discover and prioritize software development lifecycle friction and drive agentic or process-based solutions through measured delivery.
- Work across GitLab’s codebase as needed within a generalist team.
- Apply distributed systems judgment to concurrency, scale, deployment topologies, and generated-code failure modes.
- Mentor senior and mid-level engineers through design reviews and pairing.
- Collaborate with the India-based group several times a week on roadmap and tooling alignment.
- Represent the team’s technical progress to stakeholders in the CTO organization.
- Own the Technical Leadership hiring round for Staff-level candidates.
- Build and own a greenfield technical foundation whose scope can expand as the team scales.
Requirements
- Experience building reliable agentic or large language model-based systems with multi-step orchestration, tool use, guardrails, and recovery.
- Strong distributed systems and computer science fundamentals, including coordination, consistency, idempotency, rate limiting, failure modes, and degradation under load.
- Proficiency in Go, Rust, or Python, with the ability to read and modify code in the other languages.
- Ability to work autonomously in unfamiliar codebases and drive solutions from discovery through completion.
- Track record of delivering results from unclear or incomplete requirements by decomposing complex problems into concrete, shippable steps.
- Experience designing evaluation frameworks that distinguish plausible-looking results from correct results.
- History of enabling teammates through design reviews, technical writing, mentoring, and cross-team collaboration.
- Experience raising the quality bar for a team’s output.
