Responsibilities
- Define database partitioning and sharding strategies to scale control-plane state management and develop capacity models for placement and inventory state.
- Own the placement reconciliation loop, including desired-state modeling, idempotent reconcilers, drift detection, and reconciliation-lag service-level objectives.
- Generalize bulk and asynchronous operations using standard operation resources, batching, concurrency caps, and automatic halting on failure thresholds.
- Set consistency guarantees for data paths and enforce idempotency, fencing, and saga-style workflows for controller actions.
- Design and implement the control plane that places, reconciles, and operates virtual machines across the compute fleet.
Requirements
- 12 years of experience building distributed systems, including experience owning control planes, large-scale orchestration, or equivalent experience.
- Deep SQL database experience, including partitioning, sharding, replication, and online schema changes.
- Experience building asynchronous systems such as durable task queues and event-driven workflows, including retry and backpressure design.
- Hands-on experience building and operating containerized applications, including Kubernetes.
- Competence in Python or Go; experience with the other language or ColdFusion is preferred but not required.
- Deep understanding of consistency concepts including leases, fencing, idempotency, and optimistic concurrency, with hands-on reconciliation or controller-pattern experience such as Kubernetes-style controllers.
Benefits
- Flexible work arrangements through Akamai’s FlexBase program, including working from home, in an office, or a combination of both.
- Healthcare, 401K savings plan, company holidays, paid time off, sick time, parental leave, and an employee assistance program focused on mental and financial wellness, subject to eligibility requirements.
- The compensation package may include annual bonuses or incentives, equity awards, and an Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
