Base Salary

$190k - $250k/yr

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and own high-throughput OLTP database systems for clinical and operational applications.
  • Design schemas, write and tune complex queries, and implement indexing, partitioning, connection pooling, caching, replication, and high-availability improvements.
  • Define application data-access and ORM practices for Python/Django services, including solving N+1 queries, lazy loading, transaction isolation, pool exhaustion, and read/write splitting.
  • Set direction for database operations including uptime, capacity, backups, recovery, schema evolution, observability, SLOs, runbooks, and incident response.
  • Own conceptual, logical, and physical transactional data models for patients, studies, cases, results, devices, master data, and reference data.
  • Ensure data architectures, access controls, and data flows support FDA, HIPAA, GDPR, and other applicable requirements.
  • Mentor engineers and drive cross-team architectural decisions, engineering standards, and technology selection.
  • Optionally support data lake and analytics handoffs and semantic data structures for AI-agent context.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience; a master’s degree is preferred.
  • 10+ years of relevant industry experience as a backend/application database engineer or data architect, including deep hands-on OLTP experience supporting production web applications or services.
  • Deep experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Aurora, including schema design, query optimization, indexing, partitioning, replication, and HA/DR.
  • Strong Python backend and web-service data-layer experience with expert fluency in SQLAlchemy and/or the Django ORM.
  • Expert transactional data modeling experience, including 3NF or equivalent modeling and healthcare or clinical domains.
  • Experience with database performance tuning, operational excellence, cloud data systems, and AWS cost, security, and reliability tradeoffs.
  • Experience working with clinical, imaging, or device data under FDA, HIPAA, and GDPR; FHIR, HL7, and DICOM familiarity is preferred.
  • Experience mentoring senior engineers and influencing architecture across multiple teams and programs.
  • Data warehousing, ETL, data lake or lakehouse concepts, semantic layers, metadata, schema registries, and ontologies are preferred or bonus qualifications.
