Responsibilities
- Identify product and engineering opportunities using user feedback, experimentation, and technical insight.
- Shape technical direction and balance near-term product needs with long-term maintainability.
- Lead hands-on design, implementation, testing, and delivery of VS Code features across contributors and partner teams.
- Own post-release outcomes by analyzing adoption, quality issues, telemetry, evaluations, and user feedback.
- Improve responsiveness and reliability through profiling, debugging, automated testing, and better experimentation and shipping tools.
- Collaborate publicly with developers and extension authors and investigate community-reported issues.
- Mentor engineers and improve technical decisions through design and code reviews.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and 4+ years of technical engineering experience, or equivalent experience.
- Programming and application engineering skills, with the ability to become productive in a large TypeScript and Rust codebase.
- Experience leading technical design and hands-on delivery for complex projects involving multiple contributors.
- Sound product and engineering judgment for turning ambiguous user problems into practical, maintainable solutions.
- Communication and collaboration skills across team boundaries, including helping other engineers grow.
- Preferred: master's degree with 6+ years of experience, or bachelor's degree with 8+ years of experience, or equivalent experience.
- Preferred: experience building interactive applications with attention to performance, accessibility, or cross-platform behavior.
- Preferred: experience designing APIs, extension points, or reusable components.
- Preferred: experience improving products through direct user feedback, telemetry, or experiments.
- Preferred: familiarity with AI coding tools and experience building AI-powered features, developer tools, or open-source projects.
