Responsibilities
- Define the multi-quarter technical roadmap for the service mesh forwarding layer.
- Own service mesh infrastructure problems end to end, from design through production rollout and long-term operation.
- Improve proxy performance, forwarding-path latency, load balancing, and compute efficiency.
- Evolve the forwarding layer toward horizontally scalable and compartmentalized architecture with contained routing state and failures.
- Strengthen service identity and authorization while maintaining low tail latency.
- Build observability and operational signals for service owners and on-call engineers.
- Partner with product engineering and security, network, compute, and storage teams to deliver platform capabilities.
- Lead through influence by writing design documents, setting standards, leading incident response and postmortems, mentoring engineers, and introducing automation.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 8+ years of software engineering experience.
- Proficiency in one or more of Go, C++, or Java.
- Experience building and operating large-scale, latency-sensitive distributed systems or production infrastructure.
- Experience leading multi-team engineering projects through their full lifecycle across infrastructure and product teams.
- Preferred: strong knowledge of HTTP/2, gRPC, TLS, load balancing, and traffic management.
- Preferred: experience with proxies or service mesh technologies such as Envoy and with Kubernetes networking.
- Preferred: experience with service identity, authentication, and authorization, including mTLS and SPIFFE.
- Preferred: experience with staged rollouts, backward compatibility, rollback, and incremental migrations for critical infrastructure.
- Preferred: open-source contributions such as to Envoy or gRPC, plus a record of mentoring engineers and raising the hiring bar.

- Base salary ranges from USD $232,000 to $258,000 per year for San Francisco and Sunnyvale, California-based roles.
