Base Salary

$114k - $136k/yr

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with art directors, editors, and engineers to build responsive, pixel-perfect user experiences and product features.
  • Assess designs for technical feasibility, accessibility, and performance and recommend constructive alternatives.
  • Create interactive prototypes with responsive layouts, animations, and transitions.
  • Integrate, debug, and optimize video, audio, and animation assets across devices and browsers.
  • Conduct visual QA across screen sizes to ensure typography, spacing, colors, and micro-interactions match specifications.
  • Build and maintain reusable templates, tools, and documentation for recurring editorial workflows.
  • Onboard and guide designers on front-end systems, asset handoffs, and workflow integration.
  • Support the Opinion desk’s mission of independent journalism and report to the Deputy Editor, Design.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of creative front-end development experience using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Figma.
  • Strong understanding of visual design fundamentals, including typography, layout, motion, and interaction.
  • Familiarity with Git, collaborative coding workflows, and learning new front-end technologies and languages.
  • Experience or interest in emerging digital technologies such as AI API toolsets.
  • Preferred experience with Svelte, WebGL, three.js, canvas, React, After Effects, Cinema4D, Blender, or Maya.
  • Preferred experience with motion design, data visualization, video, and audio work.
  • Passion for journalism and visual storytelling, strong visual detail orientation, and interest in audience analytics.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced newsroom with flexibility for occasional breaking-news hours.
