Responsibilities
- Lead multi-quarter technical initiatives such as trace aggregation APIs, Tempo cells, autoscaling, customer limits, and query engine improvements
- Own the architecture of Tempo’s ingestion, storage, query, and metrics-generation components
- Design structured, deterministic, discoverable APIs for human users, agents, downstream products, and integrators
- Drive operational excellence through SLO ownership, automation, parameterized rollouts, actionable alerts, and toil reduction
- Partner with Product, App Observability, Asserts, Drilldown, and Grafana Assistant teams to deliver platform capabilities
- Mentor engineers through code reviews, design feedback, pairing, and technical writing
- Participate in on-call, incident response, and post-incident learning
- Contribute to the Tempo open-source community and review external contributions
Requirements
- Track record of leading complex, multi-quarter initiatives from design through delivery and operations
- Substantial hands-on experience building and operating distributed data systems in production, such as ingestion pipelines, storage engines, or query execution systems
- Strong software craftsmanship with the ability to write clean, robust, performant, maintainable software
- Strong Go experience or deep experience in Rust, C, or C++ with a path to Go
- Experience owning production services, carrying a pager, reducing toil, and working with SLOs
- Ability to lead through design documents, reviews, collaboration, and shipped code in a remote asynchronous environment
- Customer-focused and pragmatic approach to breaking complex problems into iterative deliveries
- Bonus: experience with tracing, OpenTelemetry, observability systems, query languages, SQL or TraceQL-like engines, programmable APIs, Parquet, analytical storage formats, Kubernetes, multi-tenant SaaS, AI/LLM consumers, open source, Grafana, Prometheus, Loki, or Tempo
