Responsibilities
- Define multi-year technical strategy and architecture for Rider experiences across mobile applications, client platforms, edge capabilities, and backend services.
- Set architectural direction for the Rider application and client platform so multiple teams can independently build and evolve experiences.
- Establish engineering standards and technical foundations for architecture, dependency management, build health, application size, startup and runtime performance, observability, testing, and release quality.
- Architect server-driven and cross-platform experience frameworks across native, web-based, shared, and backend-driven implementations.
- Define client-server contracts covering API design, schema evolution, backward compatibility, rollout safety, experimentation, offline behavior, and failure recovery.
- Shape architecture for on-device and edge capabilities, deciding what should run on clients versus backend systems.
- Build frameworks, SDKs, developer tools, and reusable abstractions for product engineering teams.
- Partner with Product and Engineering leadership to identify architectural constraints, technical bets, and investment priorities.
- Lead major architectural migrations and reduce systemic technical debt across the organization.
- Drive ambiguous, cross-organizational technical decisions and multiply impact through Staff+ engineers and technical leaders.
Requirements
- Extensive experience building and operating large-scale production applications on Android or iOS with deep mobile architecture expertise.
- Proven experience driving major mobile architecture decisions involving modularization, application performance, build systems, dependency management, application size, or release infrastructure.
- Experience designing APIs, data contracts, rollout mechanisms, and resilient end-to-end experiences across the client-server boundary.
- Track record of building platforms, frameworks, or engineering standards adopted by multiple teams.
- Experience establishing multi-year technical direction and anticipating architectural risks.
- Demonstrated success leading complex cross-functional engineering initiatives from strategy and design through global production adoption.
- Ability to influence across organizational boundaries and align senior engineering, product, and business stakeholders.
- Expertise establishing standards and practices for testing, performance, observability, reliability, and incident management.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- Preferred: expert-level proficiency in Kotlin, Java, Swift, or Objective-C.
- Preferred: experience with server-driven experiences, cross-platform frameworks, hybrid applications, dynamic delivery, experimentation, and progressive rollouts.
- Preferred: experience designing client-server protocols and contracts using GraphQL, gRPC, Protobuf, or equivalent API frameworks.
- Preferred: experience with large monorepositories, Bazel, and mobile developer-productivity infrastructure.
- Preferred: experience optimizing applications for constrained devices and networks, on-device machine learning, model deployment and optimization, mobile ML runtimes, hardware-accelerated inference, or mobile experiences powered by LLMs or agents.
- Preferred: ability to balance near-term delivery with durable investments and experience representing an organization through technical forums, publications, conference talks, or open-source contributions.
