Responsibilities
- Own architectural direction for a significant portion of the HCM charter across multiple teams and services.
- Identify and resolve technical constraints affecting charter velocity, reliability, and customer experience.
- Author and shepherd technical strategy documents and architecture decision records adopted by teams.
- Define service boundaries and integration contracts across HCM and adjacent Workforce Solutions platforms.
- Lead modernization and re-platforming strategy, including sequencing, migration paths, and risk management.
- Own architecture for AI-powered and agentic product capabilities, including shared services, context and retrieval patterns, orchestration, and reuse.
- Establish evaluation and quality infrastructure for non-deterministic systems, including offline and online evaluations, regression suites, guardrails, fallback behavior, cost and latency budgets, and observability.
- Set responsible-use boundaries for AI in compliance-sensitive workflows and raise AI engineering practices across the charter.
- Mentor senior and staff-track engineers, conduct design reviews, unblock teams, and contribute to hiring and technical assessment.
- Drive systemic improvements in reliability, latency, security posture, operational toil, and root-cause resolution for complex incidents.
- Represent HCM technical direction in cross-organizational architecture reviews and to senior leadership.
- Remain hands-on through prototypes, reference implementations, foundational components, and critical-path engineering.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 8 years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems at scale.
- Demonstrated Staff-level or equivalent experience setting technical direction adopted across multiple teams.
- Deep expertise in distributed systems, service architecture, API design, and relational and non-relational data modeling.
- Production depth in a modern backend language such as Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, Ruby, or Node.js, plus working knowledge of a modern front-end framework, ideally React.
- Extensive experience with cloud infrastructure, containerization, orchestration, and CI/CD at scale.
- Substantive production experience building AI systems such as LLM-backed features, retrieval-augmented architectures, or agentic workflows, including responsibility for quality and operational behavior.
- Evidence of improving how a team or organization works with AI, not merely individual experimentation.
- Track record of leading large technical initiatives through influence rather than authority.
- Excellent technical writing with design or strategy documents that drove organizational decisions.
- Proven ability to mentor and grow senior engineers.
- Preferred: experience in HR technology, payroll, workforce management, fintech, or other correctness-sensitive domains.
- Preferred: experience with rules engines, calculation or ledger-style systems, complex workflow platforms, live-system modernization, shared AI platforms, evaluation infrastructure, or organization-wide technical standards.
- Preferred: experience with front-end architecture at scale, employee-data privacy and security frameworks, and large matrixed organizations.
