Responsibilities
- Identify significant product opportunities and systemic engineering problems, setting technical direction for near-term delivery and long-term platform health.
- Develop prototypes and critical implementations, conduct testing, debug difficult issues, and use hands-on work to guide architectural decisions.
- Lead cross-team delivery across Microsoft and GitHub, resolving architectural disagreements and clarifying ownership and API boundaries.
- Own outcomes beyond release by using adoption, quality signals, evaluations, experiments, and user feedback to guide investment.
- Improve engineering effectiveness through testing strategies, performance improvements, shared design patterns, and experimentation tools.
- Lead technical discussions in the open and work with developers, extension authors, engineering partners, designers, researchers, and product leaders.
- Mentor experienced engineers and technical leaders while helping teams develop judgment and ownership.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical field and 6+ years of technical engineering experience with coding, or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated technical leadership across multiple teams, including setting direction, building alignment, and delivering substantial initiatives without reporting-line authority.
- Strong hands-on coding and design skills, with the ability to become productive in large TypeScript and Rust codebases.
- Experience designing shared platforms, APIs, or large application architectures with attention to extensibility, compatibility, performance, and maintainability.
- Strong product judgment and the ability to prioritize amid ambiguity and translate technical decisions into measurable user improvements.
- Experience mentoring experienced engineers and improving team effectiveness beyond the immediate area.
- Clear communication skills for explaining complex technical decisions and navigating tradeoffs with engineering and product partners.
- Preferred qualifications include a master's degree with 8+ years of experience, or a bachelor's degree with 12+ years of experience, or equivalent experience.
- Preferred experience includes TypeScript, JavaScript, and Rust; interactive products; accessibility and usability; cross-platform architecture; performance improvements; major migrations; experimentation and feedback practices; AI coding tools; AI-powered products; open-source projects; or extensible applications.
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check.
Benefits
- The role is based in Zurich, Switzerland.
- The typical base pay range is CHF 183,800.00–CHF 309,700.00 per year, with certain roles potentially eligible for benefits and other compensation.
- The position will be open for a minimum of 5 days, with applications accepted on an ongoing basis until filled.
