Responsibilities
- Design and implement distributed vector, full-text, and hybrid-search capabilities for DynamoDB.
- Build vector indexing, approximate-nearest-neighbor retrieval, full-text indexing, relevance scoring, hybrid ranking, and result-fusion systems.
- Design distributed query execution, partition selection, fan-out, local retrieval, top-k merging, filtering, and aggregation.
- Build index lifecycle mechanisms including creation, backfill, incremental updates, compaction, rebalancing, recovery, configuration changes, and deletion.
- Define search freshness and consistency semantics and synchronize indexes with changing DynamoDB data.
- Integrate search indexes with DynamoDB storage, partitioning, replication, and query-processing systems.
- Develop benchmarking and correctness frameworks for retrieval quality, recall, relevance, performance, scalability, and failure behavior.
- Design highly available systems that remain operational during node failures, partition movement, traffic spikes, rebuilds, and deployments.
- Translate customer requirements into technical designs, deliver production capabilities, provide technical leadership and mentoring, and operate the service in production.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of non-internship professional software development experience.
- At least 5 years of programming experience with at least one software programming language.
- At least 5 years leading the design or architecture of new and existing systems, including reliability and scaling.
- Experience building distributed systems, databases, search infrastructure, storage engines, or other high-performance data platforms.
- Strong understanding of algorithms, data structures, concurrency, and system performance.
- Experience taking complex systems from design through implementation, launch, and production operation.
- Experience mentoring, serving as a tech lead, or leading an engineering team.
- Preferred experience with vector search, full-text search, hybrid search, approximate-nearest-neighbor search, information retrieval, distributed query execution, database indexes, storage engines, partitioned systems, replication, rebalancing, failure recovery, and performance benchmarks.
- Preferred knowledge of HNSW, IVF, clustering, product quantization, inverted indexes, analyzers, tokenization, BM25, query parsing, rank fusion, score normalization, filtering, reranking, LSM trees, write-ahead logging, compaction, caching, snapshots, and recovery.
- Preferred experience with Java, Rust, or another systems-programming language.
- A bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent, or a master's degree or PhD in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related field, is preferred.
- Preferred experience with the full software development lifecycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
