Responsibilities
- Define how Production Engineering engages with product and infrastructure teams, including engagement scope and handoffs.
- Personally lead the most technically complex reliability engagements, including sharding, multi-region architecture, and JVM performance at scale.
- Set the technical bar and standards for production engineering at Canva.
- Develop pairing strategies and grow production engineering capability across the organization.
- Influence product and engineering leadership so production-readiness concerns are addressed before launch.
- Define and track metrics such as incident severity, incident duration, and clean feature launches.
- Build trusted relationships with embedded teams and help them ship faster with greater confidence and less toil.
Requirements
- Experience owning reliability for large-scale distributed systems and shipping durable solutions.
- Experience leading or shaping an embedded, cross-team engineering function.
- Hands-on software engineering experience at principal level with deep technical judgment.
- Strong cross-organizational influence and trusted technical decision-making.
- Production-scale experience with Java, Go, Rust, C++, or a comparable systems language.
- Practical distributed-systems experience with sharding, replication, failure modes, consistency tradeoffs, consistent hashing, leader election, consensus, backpressure, and circuit breakers.
- Knowledge of Linux internals, including process scheduling, memory, I/O, and networking.
- Experience building observability tooling such as tracing, dashboards, and alerting.
- Production experience with Kubernetes and container orchestration.
- Experience profiling JVM applications or systems-level processes and improving performance.
- Production experience with AWS and large-scale cloud infrastructure failure modes.
- On-call and incident-response experience.
- Nice-to-have experience in enterprise SaaS, JVM internals, garbage-collection tuning, thread profiling, data-store migrations, sharding, or multi-region architecture.
