Responsibilities
- Own the technical direction and platform evolution of Bumble’s recommendations systems serving millions of members.
- Design large-scale distributed systems for recommendation serving, feature delivery, experimentation, and feedback loops.
- Solve complex architectural and technical problems across the recommendations stack and establish durable solutions used by multiple teams.
- Define architectural principles, engineering standards, observability practices, and operational excellence improvements.
- Mentor senior engineers and influence technical direction across multiple engineering teams.
- Lead foundational initiatives involving service decomposition, recommendation infrastructure, experimentation capabilities, developer tooling, and AI-assisted engineering.
- Contribute hands-on through technical designs, prototypes, code reviews, and production code.
Requirements
- Typically 8+ years of experience building large-scale backend or distributed systems and delivering complex initiatives across multiple teams.
- Deep expertise designing and operating high-scale distributed systems using modern languages such as Go, Kotlin, Java, or similar.
- Strong understanding of recommendation systems, ranking architectures, retrieval, candidate generation, feature serving, experimentation, and feedback loops.
- Experience building cloud-native systems on Google Cloud Platform or comparable public cloud infrastructure, with knowledge of scalability, resilience, observability, and operational excellence.
- Ability to define technical strategy and influence architecture across multiple engineering teams without relying on organizational authority.
- Experience partnering with Product, Data Science, Machine Learning, and Engineering leadership to turn ambiguous problems into durable technical solutions.
- Track record of mentoring senior engineers, raising engineering standards, and improving systems, tooling, architecture, and organizational effectiveness.
- Strong AI fluency and responsible use of modern AI-assisted engineering tools.
- Preferred experience includes recommendation systems, search platforms, personalization engines, shared infrastructure, experimentation platforms, feature delivery systems, event-driven architectures, real-time data processing, consumer products at scale, or geospatial and location-aware technologies.
