Responsibilities
- Own architecture for AI voice agents, next-best-action assistants, and standalone voice, chat, and SMS agents.
- Design real-time, low-latency systems for intent detection, transcription, speaker separation, inference, and recommendations.
- Build reusable AI-agent orchestration layers with callable workflows, output contracts, and versioning.
- Define context retrieval, patient/customer identification, safe failure, human handoff, and audit-trail contracts.
- Drive agent evaluation, reliability metrics, monitoring, and SLOs for agent-facing services.
- Lead technical design reviews and architectural consistency across backend services.
- Build Python backend services and Kafka-based event streams using MongoDB and PostgreSQL.
- Work hands-on with LLM and AI-agent tooling for scheduling, recommendations, and automated documentation.
- Set testing, observability, and production-triage standards while mentoring engineers.
- Partner with product on ambiguous initiatives and phased technical plans.
- Apply healthcare security and compliance practices, including PHI handling, audit logging, OAuth/JWT authentication, and minimum-necessary data scoping.
Requirements
- 8+ years of backend engineering experience with technical ownership of a complex, multi-service system.
- Strong Python proficiency, including asynchronous programming with asyncio, and production experience with FastAPI or Django.
- Experience designing distributed, event-driven architectures with Kafka or similar technologies, service-to-service authentication, webhooks, idempotency, and retry design.
- Experience with MongoDB or another NoSQL database and working knowledge of relational databases such as PostgreSQL.
- Production experience building or operating conversational AI, voice-agent, telephony, IVR, or conversational voice systems.
- Experience with latency-sensitive speech-to-text, speaker-separation, and text-to-speech pipelines.
- Experience designing real-time decisions from streaming context, including intent detection, recommendations, confidence thresholds, and human escalation.
- Experience with LLM or agent frameworks and agent evaluation and reliability practices.
- Track record of driving architecture decisions across teams, writing and reviewing technical design documents, and mentoring engineers.
- Comfort with Docker/containerized deployments, CI/CD, observability tooling, and diagnosing production issues across service meshes.
- Proficiency with Git and collaborative development workflows.
