Responsibilities
- Serve as a subject matter expert across Vertica core server domains, including query optimization, distributed query execution, storage, concurrency, and database infrastructure.
- Define the architecture and long-term technical direction of critical Vertica database engine components.
- Research database algorithms, distributed systems techniques, and emerging technologies and apply them to the Vertica platform.
- Design and implement highly concurrent, high-performance C++ software for mission-critical database systems.
- Guide the evolution of the query optimizer, execution engine, distributed architecture, and core server technologies.
- Translate customer requirements, market trends, product strategy, and engineering input into technical direction and product requirements.
- Lead strategic planning, roadmap development, feature scoping, estimation, prioritization, and cross-functional technical initiatives.
- Guide functional, performance, scalability, resiliency, and stress-testing strategies.
- Collaborate with customers, support teams, and field organizations to turn real-world challenges into technical solutions.
- Mentor engineers and technical leaders and communicate complex architectures and decisions across the organization.
Requirements
- At least 12 years of software engineering experience, including significant experience developing complex systems software.
- Expert knowledge of C++ and performance-oriented systems programming.
- Deep expertise in database engine domains such as query optimization, query execution, storage engines, transaction processing, concurrency control, distributed systems, or database infrastructure.
- Demonstrated experience designing and implementing large-scale distributed systems and highly scalable analytical or massively parallel processing database platforms.
- Strong understanding of algorithms, data structures, operating systems, multi-threaded programming, SQL, and relational database technologies.
- Proven success owning large architectural components, influencing engineering strategy across teams, and delivering software innovation at increasing scale and complexity.
- Experience translating emerging research and innovative concepts into production-quality software.
- Proven success mentoring and developing software engineers at all levels, with excellent technical communication and collaboration skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline is required.
- A Ph.D. or master’s degree in Computer Science, Database Systems, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline is strongly preferred.
- Preferred experience includes commercial database internals, database kernel development, cost-based query optimizers, distributed query processing, mature enterprise software platforms, patents or publications, and Vertica or comparable analytical database platforms.
