Responsibilities
- Perform day-to-day operational and DevOps work on Wikimedia’s public-facing infrastructure, including deployment, maintenance, configuration, and troubleshooting.
- Implement and use configuration management and deployment tools such as Puppet and Kubernetes.
- Automate installation, configuration, and maintenance of platform services and lead continuous improvement efforts.
- Assist product teams with architectural design and help operate new services at scale.
- Participate in a shared 24/7 on-call rotation, including incident response, outage diagnosis, and follow-up across production infrastructure.
- Collaborate asynchronously with a global cross-functional team and mentor peers in technical and operational areas.
- Travel 1–2 times per year for in-person events and team meetings.
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience in an SRE, Operations, or DevOps role.
- Experience with shell scripting and SRE-related scripting languages including Python, Go, Bash, or Ruby, plus configuration management tools such as Puppet or Ansible.
- Experience designing and managing infrastructure security for large fleets of diverse services and responding technically to security incidents.
- Experience with Linux package management and strong Linux system-level troubleshooting skills.
- Demonstrated history of automating tasks, identifying process gaps, and finding automation opportunities.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills and the ability to work independently across multiple time zones.
- Experience leading and participating in incident response, post-incident reviews, root-cause analysis, and preventive-measure implementation.
- Preferred experience includes fleet-wide security policies, software supply-chain security, open-source infrastructure security, software security collaboration, credential management, immutable logging and auditing, monitoring and metrics infrastructure, open-source software development, LAMP technologies, MediaWiki, and cross-team SLOs.
